What is newborn jaundice?

The NHS describes newborn jaundice as yellowing of a baby’s skin and the whites of the eyes caused by increased bilirubin in the blood.

Why can bilirubin build up after birth?

The NHS explains that a newborn liver may not yet clear bilirubin as efficiently as it does later, so bilirubin can temporarily accumulate.

Is newborn jaundice always caused by another illness?
